ADD/ADHD

I worked in the Nashua School District as a special needs tutor for five years. I have tutored students of all ages with autism, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, emotional learning disabilities, illness, hard of hearing, teen pregnancy, drug rehabilitation and children in the custody of the state, just to name a few... I also work at the college level and enjoy working with young adults who need individualized attention to build their confidence in their own abilities. I see the potential in each student and when you believe in them, they believe in themselves. I use strategies and tools to make learning easier and that build confidence. When students start to learn with more ease it instills their yearning for learning and helps them to become a lifelong learner. Knowledge is always empowering and difficulties in learning are just challenges to be met individually.

accounting

I enjoy tutoring accounting classes of all types. I personally go beyond simply helping a student memorize accounting principles. I show students how to understand the concepts and how to study properly and effectively. I focus on how to tackle accounting principles accurately by breaking down the concepts in easy to understand, everyday examples. I promote understanding of accounting vocabulary with a "back-to-basics" style. I build confidence by using a very positive, one-on-one approach towards accounting that focuses on a student's strengths and helps them conquer their challenges, one at a time. I try to demystify accounting for students so they can reach their own potential. I have taken several accounting classes, that were required as part of my business major and accounting minor college degrees. I also took accounting in high school, specifically because I always had a strong interest in it. I knew at an early age that I liked the subject altogether. That interest has only grown stronger over the years.

2/9/2014 Karen has been doing a great job getting my son to understand his math work. She is patient, creative and has great energy. My son has really clicked with her. My son has been struggling with his math since we transferred him from a public school into a private school. The math work is definitely more intense and Karen is doing great a job getting him to better understand the concepts and do better at problem solving. Her patience and energy is helping with his confidence in math. I am very pleased. Update 2/16/2014 Also, his latest quiz grade and test grade were significantly higher than his past scores. My son was son happy to get an 100% on his quiz and a 93% on his test. These are the highest scores he has gotten all year. And I believe that the tutoring is what has helped him better his grades. Update 7/26/2014 Karen continues to do a great job with my son. She is always very encouraging and patient. She is working on my son on concepts that he will be introduced to this upcoming school year. Very happy with his sessions. Update 11/2/14 My son's grades have really improved since the beginning of the term. He had a little bit of a bumpy start, but has really turned it around with the help of Karen. She continues to be supportive, patient and encouraging. She has a way of making my son understand the material and feeling confident with what he is doing. I continue to be very happy with her tutoring. I have referred Karen to another friend, who also is very happy with the results for her son. Great job Karen! Update 3/30/15 Karen continues to help my son with his Math. I am always impressed with her patience. My son can be very fidgety and can get distracted. But she is always able to gently reign him in. Since we transferred my son from public school to private school 2 years ago he was definitely behind in match and needed to bridge the gap. The math at his new school was far more advanced. Karen has definitely helped catch him up and continues to reinforce the idea that you need to understand why you are doing what you are doing and not simply memorize the steps. She is really teaching him skills that will help as he advances in Math.

I have used many tutors on WyzAnt over the past few years for 3 children. Some have been adequate, and some excellent. The reaction of my daughter to her first lesson with Karen was unique (my daughter is a sophomore in college). You could see the relief in her face in how much the tutoring session had helped her understand the subject material. With regard to Karen, she commented to me that she "loved her!". The subject she was having trouble with was accounting, a subject that Karen indicated that she had not tutored recently. This was not, however, a problem for Karen. She was completely prepared from the start. Karen went beyond simply helping my daughter memorize accounting principles. She showed her how to understand what was being asked of her, and how to study properly and effectively, and how to answer the problem accurately. She reviewed problems my daughter had in previous tests that she performed poorly on and gave her much more confidence with the subject. This tutor is exceptional and gets my highest recommendation.

My daughter has always had anxiety surrounding math. When the word math is mentioned, I can count to 3 and without fail I witness an eye roll, a deep exhale, uttering "I'm horrible at math". I knew I needed a special person who is creative, patient, intuitive, respectful of my daughter's challenges, and inspirational. In short someone who excellent soft skills. Enter Karen. Karen has an internal radar for math anxiety and knows how dance around it and keep the student engaged. It's an art. My daughter actually looks forward to seeing her math tutor! I highly recommend Karen.

Karen has been a great asset to our daughter in math. Since she began with her, our daughter has raised her math scores a solid grade level and received positive comments from the teachers at school. They have remarked at how much improvement she has made in a short time. Karen has also been very helpful with issues pertaining to school and has helped us make some good decisions going forward. She is very knowledgeable of her subject and our daughter has benefited from her techniques.

John S. from Acton, MA

I had class with Karen on public speaking. She is very knowledgeable and patient. She is also optimistic, open and very kind. I do recommend her as your tutor.

Paula F. from Amesbury, MA

Karen is helping our 8th grader with SSAT prep. She was so warm and enthusiastic! At the end of the session our daughter, who had started out a bit apprehensive about the work, was smiling, engaged, and looking forward to the next session.

Helen G. from Derry, NH

Karen taught me a couple of techniques that have helped me to be more efficient. I liked Karen's way of teaching and explaining the lessons and how to follow and use every tool to research topic that applies to the assignment. With Karen's help, I was able to complete my difficult assignment just by following her patient techniques.

With my son we tried for the first time online tutoring and we were very happy with outcome and with Karen! Thank you and looking forward to work with you this month.

Laurie R. from Chelmsford, MA

I cannot thank Karen enough for identifying the cause of my son's anxiety and frustration with handwriting. She did this within minutes of working with my son, something that the public school occupational therapist never noticed. She explains things in the way that YOUR child will understand and is a huge boost to their self-esteem. I look forward to a continued relationship with Karen.

Craig S. from Dracut, MA

Karen is excellent in her approach, preparation, strategies and effort to give the very best guidance and teaching. My son is rather a unique case in his strengths and his weaknesses in math. Karen knows how to identify the shortfalls and then combines both her psychology and confidence building skills with solid math principles and intelligent shortcuts that work very well in the field of mathematics. Karen also had a very well equipped arsenal of reference materials that were custom selected by her to use in the lesson which focused on the problem areas my son was having. Last but not least, Karen was able to align her schedule with some urgent deadlines we had when we called her in at the last minute to help us. We highly recommend Karen for your tutoring needs.

Xiaoying L. from Nashua, NH

Debra B. from Methuen, MA

Karen taught my 12 year old daughter that there is more than ONE way to find the answer. "Math is taught NOT memorized".
